FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)

Q: How do I know if a Race is cancelled?
A: Do not count on the "grapevine" to determine if a Race is cancelled. Whether or not a Race is cancelled is determined by the Race Director. The following guidelines are used to help determine a Cancellation:
1) -25 Wind Chill Factor
2) The host ski area closes, or the lift servicing our run is closed or the run is inacessible.
3) Travel conditions are severely dangerous. We will not be cancelling simply because people may be late due to the road conditions. PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE ACCORDINGLY.
Again, remember that THE FINAL DECISION TO CANCEL IS UP TO THE RACE DIRECTOR, and IT IS THE MEMBER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT IF A RACE IS CANCELLED as it is not always possible to get the web site updated or get a mass e-mail out in a timely fashion. If you are unsure, contact the Race Director directly. The Race Director's contact information is posted on the "Contact Us" page of the web site. The Race Director will respond promptly in the event of a cancellation or threat of cancellation. The MWM Board will make every effort to get an e-mail out and/or update the web site, but there is no guarantee that this will happen in a timely fashion. These Guidelines are listed in the Race Series Rules document. See the Membership page or speak to the Race Director to see this document. All Cancelled Races will be rescheduled.

Q: What if I'm not sure of how many races I will be able to attend?
A: Pick the membership level that fits what you think you can make; you can always upgrade your level before the end of January.

Q: How many races do I need to attain a result in to be considered in the overall awards?
A: There is no minimum or maximum number of races necessary to be considered in the overall; the highest point holder will win. Note that there are several different race series in MWM and many different awards and recognitions!

Q: What is the Ironman?
A: The Male and Female racer with the most starts - regardless of finish result - will be awarded the Ironman award and have their names etched on the trophy.

Q: What races are considered in the overall?
A: All USSA-sanctioned races except the National Qualifier.

Q: What is the definition of a "race"?
A: A race is defined as the combined time of two runs. You must finish two runs to be considered in the result and to attain result points. Super-G and Downhill are single-run events, but these events are only hosted in the east and west for obvious reasons.

Q: What races are not included in my Midwest Masters membership package?
A: The races that are not included are the Central Masters Championships, the Spring Fling, and non-Central USSA events such as Western Regionals and Nationals. Other races may be added to to the MWM schedule during the season that are not administered by MWM (such as the Dash for Cash). These races are also not included. The Race Schedule indicates which races are included in your Membership Package. Note that certain Membership Packages only allow for a certain number of MWM races.

Q: Do I have to register before each race?
A: If you are a member, you must check in at each race. This can be done online (see the Schedule page). If you have used up the races in your MWM membership package, or are not a MWM member, you will need to register and pay an individual race fee at the race.

Q: What if I am late for a race?
A: Contact the Race Director or any Race Crew member as quickly as possible and get ready to race! You may need to run at the end of the Run Order.

Q: Do I need a USSA Membership to race with Midwest Masters?
A: Yes, The USSA membership is required for insurance purposes and to have our races recognized on a national level.

Q: Can I try a race to see if I like Midwest Masters Racing?
A: Yes, a temporary USSA license can be obtained, and a one-time MWM Race Registration fee can be paid.

Q: With my USSA Masters license can I do other Masters races around the country?
A: Yes! You will need to contact the race office that is handling the race you would like to attend. Much of this information can be found in the USSA Competition Guide on the USSA website. One of the greatest advantages of Masters racing is the ability to race all over the country and Canada. Many MWM racers compete all over the nation as well as internationally!
